Charlwood Place

Desciption of site: A neglected orchard, containing a variety of fruit trees swamped by nettles. Mixed species hedges. Overgrown hedges. Ancient woodland. Restored pond. Two overgrown ponds.

Long term aim: To restore the orchard to the attractive landscape feature it once was with livestock grazing around trees. To have the majority of hedges 2 metres tall. To maximise value for wildlife by encouraging hedgerow trees. To maintain some hedges as overgrown for the species that depend on them. To create a 8 metre woodland ride. To maintain ground flora. To create good habitat for Grass Snakes. To create good habitat for dragonflies and damselflies. To maintain good water quality by careful farm operations around ponds.

Hedges marked green and red on map  Mixed species hedges  To have the majority of hedges 2 metres tall.  Gradually increase cutting height by 1-2 feet each time they are cut.  On-going 
Hedges marked green and red on map  Mixed species hedges  To maximise value for wildlife by encouraging hedgerow trees.  Tag any potential hedgerow trees so the hedge cutter can see them and leave them uncut.  On-going 
Overgrown hedges  Overgrown hedges  To maintain some hedges as overgrown for the species that depend on them.  Leave some hedges uncut.  On-going 
Telvet Copse  Ancient woodland.  To create a 8 metre woodland ride.  Coppice shrubs along edges of ride, trim grasses and bramble at edges every 2-3 years, mow middle annually.  Winter 2003

Pond as marked on map  Restored pond  To create good habitat for Grass Snakes   Strim some patches of nettles, thistles etc around pond to create bare areas for basking  On-going
